Whenever my parents had spare change, it went right into the can. When the can was full...it went right to their favorite charity.
Times are a bit tougher right now...and $ is hard to save...but there are so many other ways to give.
I am sharing with you my 5 favorite...but would always love to hear about more. It is impossible to do everything but if we all did A LITTLE...it adds up to A LOT!
Project Linus...here is a quote from their national site
The Project Linus Mission
***Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help us achieve our mission statement, which states:

First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

Together we have distributed over two million blankets to children in need since our inception in 1995.
I live in the Boston area and crochet...there is a big need for all blankets...but I focus on ones for teens...my husband and I will deliver batches of blankets when needed...

***Jeans for Teens-found out about this wonderful 'fundraiser' via an email I got from Aeropostle
Here is link

http://www.dosomething.org/teensforjeans/home?cm_mmc=EMAIL-_-090122_T4J-_-Mt-_-MT
Here is quote from their site

Teens for Jeans is a national campaign, launched by Aéropostale and Do Something, empowering YOU to collect jeans for homeless teens.

Just drop off any pair of your gently worn jeans to any Aéropostale store between January 26th and February 22nd and we'll make sure they get donated to a local homeless shelter or charity. To say thanks, Aéropostale will give you an additional 25% off your next pair of jeans.

Last year you helped us collect over 125,000 pairs. This year we're looking to help twice as many teens.

*** Giving blood or platelets...there is ALWAYS a need to do this. And it is a gift you can give that is priceless...need I say more. Call your local Red Cross, Hospital, etc...or check out your paper...there is an ongoing need for this...

***Bone Marrow Donor...call your local hospital. Here in MA is is done through Dana Farber. This is another gift that is priceless. If you qualify (there are several things in terms of your own health), you will be sent a simple swab kit to do at home and then send to the hospital, clinic, etc...if they then need you...they will tell you what they will need you for...and you can save a life!!!
There is a small fee...BUT...many insurance companies cover it...and if you cannot afford it...they will NOT turn you down, as there is funding for people who want to give and who either cannot afford it (I believe it was only $25.00...but don't quote me...lol)...they must do this because of the tremendous costs...but again...noone will be turned down...this is something badly needed...and takes very little of your time.
And lastly...your local food pantry. Find out where your drop off is (ours is at our local library)...and bring food when you can. Hunger is a problem in our world that simply should NOT exist.....there is enough food to go around...we just have to give it...whenever you are shopping pick up one can of something...anything...so often there are great sales...put a small bag in corner of your kitchen.,..and put in what you have...when the bag is full...take the kids to drop it off...
And there are SO many more things...
Life is too short not to be kind...and we must teach our kids by example.
And the best part...is everyone feels good about it...the recipient, you, your family...
Life Is Good!

Good News In The News!!! The IPOD- check...
The DVD that will be on cable soon...did not get...
But what I do feel this year is a sense of peace...even with the hustle and bustle.
As a nanny...who works for families who need one at the last minute (a "short term nanny), I work it hotels when people come in from out of town, for people whose full time nanny is sick or off, for parents who just need a night out and do not have someone to watch the kids. I love it. I have also met so many wonderful and interesting people.
I have seen that this is a huge world with ALL sorts of people.
This year, I was very sick for 2 weeks..lost 2 weeks pay...and was surrounded with love (and food)...and it turned out to be one of the best times ever because I felt so blessed.
This year I felt hope for the first time in a long time, that our country would be OK...as I watched the most amazing election I have even watched and been a part of.
This year, I have seen my 16 year old son go from not caring about much to getting a job, doing well in school, even having his first girl friend.
I have seen my 14 year old daughter get honors in school, get back together with her old boyfriend (some may say this is young...but these 2 are very special together...something really wonderful!)
I have seen the news and people stepping up more than ever to help others in hard times.
It was an emotional year...but a good one and one of learning and loving.
When things aren't going the way we want...I have seen people proact, not react...and good things happen.
This year I feel that the future brings much hope and much happiness...
And it is what I wish for everyone.

Dustin Pedroia!!! I knew I wanted Dustin back...but not sure what would happen, so put it in the back of my mind for fear of dissappointment...we that did NOT happen...I got my best present so far for the holidays!!!!!!! Took some Pepcid, tried to go back to sleep...still sick. Told husband something was wrong. Called Primary Dr. and he said to get me to the Emergency Room because the pain had not gone away. Long story short...it was my appendix. Surgery, and recovery...here I am a week later feeling a lot better...and aside from the surgery, and medication, the biggest part of healing was and is-kindness.
Friends and family have called, written, taken the kids places and brought TONS of food over.
The nurses were amazing-I cannot say enough about these fabulous men and women!
I had never been sick...the surgical staff made me feel so comfortable that any fears disappeared quickly.
I could go on and on and on.,..
The fact is that Kindness goes a long way...it was the key to me feeling so much better now.
And it made me think that, we must continue, on an ONGOING basis, be kind and give...
I called the hospital and we are bringing our old kids videos down to the children's section...they have VCR's in their rooms..also books, coloring books, games etc
I have a bunch of audio books that I never listened to...right to the adults at the hospital
Food-we have committed to buying atleast 1 extra item each time we shop and putting in the food bin for the food pantry.
Winter coats...PLEASE give them to any local shelter
Old Sheets and Towels...please give to your local animal shelter
The options are endless...
I have always believed in giving...but after this week...after a 'simple appendectomy' I learned more about kindness that ever before.
Life is worth it...we are put on this earth to help

Whining about Whining

I know I am whining...and it is ironic because I am whining about whining...but here goes.
I know a woman whose line during every conversation is "Welcome To My Life" and then proceeds to complain about the littlest things in the world...they may be big to her, but in the scheme of things...they are not life threatening.
They are about things that are not going her way...and in general they do NOT go her way, because she is an admitted control freak and things never go her way, when someone else has a say in something that she is involved in. Self Pity rules her life...
I know others like her. At almost 49 years old, I am choosing not to be around people like this unless I must be.
Well...my feelings are, that in general, most things in life are good...that most people are kind and thoughtful. That there are real tragedies and heartbreaks in life that we have a right to be angry, sad, upset about...etc. That the fact that your daughter did not to get to sit who she wanted to sit with on the bus during a field trip, is not a big deal.
A friend of my mom's died a number of years ago at age 57, of breast cancer. She was a guidance counselor and worked from her hospital bed until the last few days of her wonderful life. She never felt sorry for herself.I have linked a site in her memory and honor.
She said that what she learned from life is that there are 3 kinds of people.
The Givers
The Takers
The In Betweens

She said keep and treasure the givers!
The takers...spend as little time as possible with these people and avoid them if you can.
The In Betweens...those are the people who give a bit, take a bit...enjoy what you can.

And give whatever you give. A smile is giving. Time is giving. An open ear, an open heart...all giving...
Giving is allowing others to give to you...as it makes other feel good.

My theory in life...
Life is too short not to be kind.

Just popped in to say HI

I am a nanny...doing short term work...basically I get called any time someone needs a nanny...they may be in town briefly, their full time nanny may have called in sick...etc...and I work for tons of different families. I have done a 3 hour shift at a local church and a 12 hour shift at someone's home...I love it.
The oldest kid I have watch so far has been 7 and the youngest, 1 month...and then I come home to 2 teens...what a variety of kids.
I have met the most wonderful parents as well.
Today I am gone all day...2 towns over. Big Kids/Little Kids. I just went back to work as a part time Nanny...well actually a "Nanny On Call." I have Nannied on and off for the last several years. I took the last few years off to be with my teen/tween kids...and the 'adolescent years.' Now, as they are 13 1/2 and 16...they are at great ages where I was comfortable going back to work...so I am now doing just that, and could not be happier. We desperately need the $ and I really love being with...the kids.
But homelife is still busier than ever. A crazy time of year with many activities, days off from school (somehow October, the kids miss more days than any other month...),,,and the 'normal' everyday housework stuff.
But life is good. Very simple...yet very busy. We are all healthy. Doing well in school, great friends...etc.
Today, friends coming over. Tomorrow...football and cheerleading.
Red Sox have a double header (and pulled off a great win last night...thank you Kevin Cash...great homer!). I have lots of laundry and a few errands...
A busy, yet simple, and very nice life!

High School, Middle School-First Day is Always Emotional

Today the kids went back to school...my 2 teenagers.
No matter what age they are...the first day of school is still emotional. My son, who left school to be homeschooled as a sophmore last year, wanted to got back...we could not have been happier. A lot of circumstances had us pull him out last year...but HE chose not only to go back, but to repeat his sophmore year...this is a young man, now 16, who really got it together this summer. He looked great as he walked with his best friend to school. I gave him a few extra $ so he could grab a snack on the way home...as I watched him go down the street...even at age 16, I still started to cry...happy tears.
My 13 year old daughter, in her usually fashion of doing everything with a group...met at her friend's house...with 3 other girls. They all had on their 'first day of school clothes.' One had a cute pink dress, one had a cute denim skirt and my daughter and another friend...who even look alike...had on jeans. The best part of her outfit...hot pink Converse Sneakers...My friend took a picture of the 4 of them together...4 friends who have been best friends since second grade. As she was running fashionably late, and as I dropped her off at her friend's house...
I cried.
I cannot wait to hear what teachers they have, who's in their classes, what they had for lunch...etc.
They will come home with a long list of school supplies that I forgot to get, and clothes that they "must have because everyone else does." And I will buy it all...
This was the best summer ever. Very few 'big' things happened...no big trips, no shopping for really expensive clothes, NO DRAMA! LOTS of wonderful 'little' things happened that really matter...they both have wonderful friends, and are great kids...
So as I sent them off to school today, I did it with a happy heart...knowing that all if fine in my world.

Hurricane

I have not blogged in a while...doing what many of you are doing...wrapping up the summer and getting the kids ready for school...going back to work part time as a nanny and other stuff...
Lots to write...but will do that later.
What is on my mind right now is what is going on in our country. Another Hurricane. As citizens of this country, we MUST help the people affected by the damage being done, as I now write. I feel that not enough was done 3 years ago and I hope that we have learned from our mistakes. I hope that we insist that more is done to help people of our own country...that we write to more congress people and insist that more $ ahd more help go to the people of OUR nation for aid; that we do not throw away things we no longer need and donate them (books, school supplies, household items, clothes, etc; that we send $ IF we can; that we do absolutely whatever we can to help. I have watched the news, and to me, I have never seen such strength as I have seen from the families who are left their homes, not knowing if they will ever be able to return...and this being the second time this has happened. With smiles on their faces and strength in their souls, they move, return and go on...even with this devistation.
As the day goes on and more information is given, please keep everyone going through this in your thoughts...and if there is ANYTHING you can do, please do it.
And to anyone going through it right now, please know that this time around, noone will be forgotten.

The Election, Laundry, Being Blessed

My kids are old enough to understand about the upcoming election...and a lot is happening...Obama has just picked his running mate and we are now awaiting McCain's.
Every election has meant something...but this year it seems to mean more...and I couldn't figure out why...until I sat quietly and just THOUGHT. As my kids get older...now aged 16 and 13, I can actually see the reality of their future...I always thought about it when they were young, but somehow it becomes more real as they become older. I can now see that they will not be living with us forever. That they will soon be able to enlist in the armed forces...they will soon be able to vote and drink. As they get older, job options open up. They will be driving soon (my son will soon be getting his permit). I see more and more clearly that I can make less choices for them...that I can guide more and control less. I am voting this year, less for myself and more for them.
I want my kids to live in a world where there is peace. I want them to understand that they must work hard to live and make a living. I want them to understand that life may not always be easy and fun...but it is worth it...and that they are blessed. I want them to make decisions on the facts, not what they 'think' are the facts. I want them to know that each day and each hour and each minute is important.
I was mumbling about the laundry and then just sat on the cold floor basement....and realized that I am lucky that I can DO the laundry...that I am healthy. That I have enough $ to pay for clothes, for electrity, for heat. That I am blessed to have a family to be able to do this for...it may seem so small...but even being able to do the laundry for my family, is a blessing...because I CAN. I want my kids to appreciate even small things like this.
And I want this for everyone.
I know that is not possible...but when I vote in the upcoming election...I will put my vote to the people I believe will help this world become a better and easier place...for my kids...and for everyone...And I will share my decisions and reasons with the kids...so they know...how deep my love is for them...enough that I am voting for people that I believe will help make their lives the best it can be.

School is a comin'

Well...the day is fast approaching...back to school. I will soon have 2 kids in 2 grade..8 and 10...and they are not all that happy...:). Usually this time of year means they get to see their friends again, go back to their after school activities and even hook up with some beloved teachers. But it has been a great summer for both of them...they SAW their friends, they played their sports, and even saw their teachers on the field. What they are unhappy about...summer reading...which they are cramming this week, back packs, eating on a schedule (my kids are perpetual snackers), and worst of all--GETTING UP IN THE MORNING!
I remind them that everyone has to do this...and even their dad and I did...but of course, as I felt many years ago...this does not matter. What matters is THEY have to do it.
Once at school, it will be fine...and even fun...they DO get to see more friends, get to have NEW teachers, even the food isn't bad at the Middle School and High School...and they will even sign up for an extra activity or 2...I'm sure.
But the one thing, I just cannot say is "fun" are those mornings...but then again...who really does like to get out of bed?
And although it does not matter to them...I am the one who has to get up first, to wake them up...so we are all in the same boat..
And it will a great year...even if we are all a bit more tired.

Being Kind

We've had a very busy week...and an upcoming weekend...of lots of family stuff...weddings, anniversaries, etc...and starting Monday, School prep...my kids see it as clothes shopping and mom being too tired to cook, so ordering in for pizza...I see it as 'bugging them' to finish their summer reading and pulling out that list of school supplies they got the last day of school so they have the necessary tools to go to school...their version of 'tools' are new and expensive sneakers, tons of new shirts, and extra $ in the lunch bucket for dessert. My 'tool version' is notebook, binders, sharpies, etc...ah, the Generation Gap.
But as we do what we have been doing for 11 years...I also have been feeling emotional...there was a recent radio telethon for the Jimmy Fund here in Boston/Red Sox Nation. Jerry Lewis will be having his telethon in a few weeks. And I have some things with family and friends that I just found out about...some health issues...that are very difficult...
So I am focusing on being kind and giving back...as much as we can. It means not being judgemental, giving any time that you can, not throwing something away that someone else can use (a recent example...if your daughter or son no longer fit in those baseball or softball cleets...give them to the Little League/Babe Ruth coordinator or a friend...SOMEONE can use them....)
ETC ETC
Our world needs to be softer and kinder. Giving does not alway mean $....it means simply, whatever you can give...even a "hello" to someone who needs one.
I will tell one story on how things can change people. My daughter was harrassed a bit by a girl at school last year...not threatened...just sarcastic and nasty remarks. But something inside told me this girl did not have such a great homelife. Well...come to find out, she signed up for cheerleading...her first year...this is my daughter's 9th year. AND she is in her stunt group...so they now have to be together. I told my daughter what my grandmother taught me..."you can get a fly better with honey than vinegar.' Long story short...they are getting along great...cheerleading and some positive feedback and attention was exactly what this young lady needed...and all is well!!!!!!!
Being kind goes a long way...

Busy Week, The FAMILY MEETING, Support group

We all have them...weeks that we just can't seem to catch up...GOOD weeks, just hectic ones. This week was and IS one of those. We have 3 family functions coming up...Family Portrait, a Friend's wedding and a big brunch the morning after the wedding...all of which require special clothing. I like to dress nice...but I really do not like to shop...and being on a very tight budget...had to be careful with what I shopped for.
For the photo-tan pants and pastel shirts, closed toed shoes. Harder than I thought finding closed toes shoes for my 13 year old daughter...wants nothing but funky sneakers and sandals. But she's a good kid. I found a pair that was just "OK" and she will wear them. Our son...the Jeans and Sneakers Man...found a pair of cheap pants at Building 19! But they were 5" too long...hemmed them...bought a yellow shirt at the same store...although he TOO did not "love" it...is a good kids as well...and said it was fine. Hubby..a big man...had tan pants. Found a 3X shirt at Walmart and am 'fudging it' with some black sneakers...that LOOK like black shoes.
ME...I'm short...also found pants that were too long...hemmed them...and found a decent shirt at Walmsrt...
So we all have our clothes...we are then told about all the touching up they can do...and was told that all 4 grandchildren can have their braces 'removed' in the touch up...
I honestly, do not understand this...because at ages 12 (my twin nephews), 13 and 16...the kids have braces...but my parents want this...so the 4 kids will be "BRACE FREE" thanks to the art of photography
THE WEDDING...Sat. Night. The kids weren't invited. My husband works at Home Depot and had to change his hours for the photo on Friday...it's Tax Free Weekend here in Massachusetts...and his boss, a great guy, who never gets annoyed...did get annoyed when he asked to change his schedule for both days...My husband Dick is almost 65 and he cannot risk losing his job...so he is not going. I'm going solo...which is fine...
Sunday brunch...all I can say is YUM!!!!!!!!!!
After that...it is all about school and setting in a bit...something my teens are not looking forward to. I told them that after the pictures tomorrow night, we are having the "Dreaded Family Meeting." They KNOW what this means...and in their eyes, it's 'not pretty.' It is hard to get us all together...but we will be tomorrow night. I have a new 'chore chart'...honestly, it will take each kid about 10 minutes each day in 'real time.' But in their time...with the feet dragging and begging for mercy, it will take a lot longer. I've done this before, but now, I have a 'support group.' All of the moms that I know of teens are on the same page...all of us have declared war on our dirty homes and have decided that we will no longer be wimps with the kids...they WILL do the chores, or they will not have things they so desperately want and need...ie: $, computer time, etc.
It's Time for MOM to take a break!
Today...am working on Pampered Chef, cleaning hubbies sneakers so they look like shoes, quick trip to grocery store, and other stuff.
Enjoy the day! :-)

What Makes Us Happy

What a busy week...lots of activities...and lots of other stuff.
I just got hired as a substitute at a local gym's day care...cannot wait! Am waiting for the CORI to come in and expect to start in Sept. The hours are short shifts of only 3 hours...and I will be on call at first, but am expecting a permanent slot soon. My husband absolutely hates getting dressed up...so much so that he does not even own a suit. Being on a very limited budget, it is also something that we simply would like not to have to spend $ on. So I asked a family member if a shirt and tie would be OK without a jacket and I was told firmly NO. She said that I would be embarrased if I walked in with my husband and he had no jacket on (the end result is, we are going to get him a jacket...just because it will make any possible comments, non existant, if we do...)
So it got me thinking...what really embarrases me. It definitley is not how my husband dresses...he is always clean and neat. If he did not wear a jacket to this wedding I would not be embarrased in the least!
What has embarrased me is when my kids act inappropriately. I'd like to say that over the years they did not act up in public or talk back to an adult who deserved their respect, or that I never got a call from a teacher (and not a 'good' call)...but that is not the case. Kids are kids...and they do this stuff...but THIS is when I have been embarrased.
The other day, I was at the ATM machine...I fell into a muddy puddle. I got covered in mud. Banged up my knee. Had mud all over me. I looked up and there was another person at the ATM...I was embarrased (because I felt so stupid for parking near the puddle in the first place and not seeing it).
I've had a few fender benders in my day...just wasn't looking...that embarrased me.
I get embarrased for other people. When a kid gets embarrased, I get embarrased for them.
I get embarassed about things that most people get embarrased about...a tear in your clothes that you did not notice, dropping something in a store that may break, etc etc.
But I do not get embarrased about how I look, how my husband looks, how my kids look. If he did not wear a jacket to the wedding...it would be fine with me...but to 'keep the peace,' Jacket it is...and that's the only reason...
Love your kids, enjoy your day, remember that kindness means everything.

From Homeschool To High School

My theory on education-there are many ways to learn and be educated...public school, private school, homeschool, charter school...etc...Education is critical, but each child is different and we must respect the individual choices that parents/guardians make as long as it is in the best interest of the child.
Our daughter has been in public school since Kindergarten-a very outgoing and easy going kid. Good student. Lots of fun.
Our son has always been quieter and more intense. We homeschooled him 1st and 1/2 way through second grade. We transfered him into public school because he asked to be with his soccer friends. Everything was fine until 5th grade...adolescence took over...he did poorly in school and got into some trouble at school-no homework, speaking out in class, skipping class...etc. We tried to work it through...and he had some amazing teachers, but all in all...it was rough. Sophmore year, he simply does nothing. We meet with teachers, deans, etc...and get nowhere. He comes home last Nov. with a big black eye...he got in a planned fight, off the high school grounds with a young man he has had trouble with for years. He felt bullied into this fight. Next day, he goes back...the bullying does not stop...by lots of the kids...who saw the first fight and wanted to see the 2nd fight again...he didn't want this. A few days goes by and I get a call from him...he is at the Public Library...he left school and cannot go back. we call the school...tell him he's with us...and in 2 days, was homeschooling him again. It went well. We then assume that he will either homeschool the following year or drop out and get his GED-NOT our first choice, but something that had to be considered. 2 weeks ago he came up to us and said he wants to go back to school. I dropped my lunch. He is a young Junior in High School. My husband convinces him to repeat his sophmore year...no arguements here. Called the school, got him in. Went from the class of 2010 to the class of 2011
From Homeschool to High School...and all is well!

Bye Manny

Manny is out of the Red Sox. And I am fine with that. He is one heck of a ball player, but he left on a sour note, not being able to keep his negative and personal opinions to himself, or atleast out of the media spot light. I feel that there is no room for this in the Red Sox and totally support their decision to trade him. He gave us some amazing years , but I feel that the last few weeks he was a total distraction to the team, the fans and everyone else. The Red Sox are a team of character and the team is made up of not only incredible ball players, coaching staff, executives, media, etc...but of men and women who are gentlemen and ladies. When you believe that you are better than anyone else and are not a good teammate...you do not belong on the Red Sox. He stood out because he was not like the others, and not always in a nice way. I am sorry that he chose not to be kind at the end...but the Red Sox will now be better off. I hope that the Dodgers will be able to make him into a nicer person...Joe Torre is a good man and a good coach. Manny has great numbers and knows how to play the game. He gave us 8 good years and helped us win 2 World Championship...but when it came to being a gentleman, he did not know how to do this in the end...I am sorry for that.
If I met him today, I would thank him for some great baseball, even for some humorous moments ("Manny being Manny"), and I would wish him well. But I am happy that he is no longer with this hardworking, classy, kind team. I am happy that the Sox and all of us fans will not be distracted by this any longer. Now...guys...
PLAY BALL!!!!!!!

How we met

I talk about my kids a lot...but this post is about my husband of 18+ years. I was good friend's with Dick's sister...we used to work together. We would go out often and Dick would come with us. At the time we met, he was going out with a very nice woman...he was (lol and IS) 16 years older than me. He has 2 grown kids, one is 7 years younger than me and 1 is 9 years younger...He is divorced, and gets along great with his ex...a nice woman...the marriage just didn't work out.
I had been thru lots of relationships...a few pretty bad and a few just OK...but I was enjoying being single when we met.
SO long story short...we saw each other a lot...because I hung out with his sister.
I must have been ready to get in another relationship because to this day, remember the conversation I had with his sister...saying what a nice guy he was...but for her not to say anything because he had a girlfriend. She said they were about to break up...I said to PLEASE tell him after they broke up.
Short story...they broke up, we started dating, moved in within a matter of months, 6 months after moving in together, got married. 18 years later...2 kids, 4 animals (cat, chinchilla, 2 guinea pigs). He works at a local hardware store, I sell Pampered Chef. I love to cook, he loves to eat. Be both love baseball. He has been an umpire for local baseball teams for over 35 years and loves it. We rent a nice duplex and live on a dead end street with 3 other wonderful families...it's a great living situation with a wonderful neighborhood.
He is originally from Vermont...I grew up right out of Boston.
He was in the service (he met his first wife in Germany).
He's a big guy with a big heart. Used to have full head of red hair but is now almost bald and what he has left of hair is a frostly white.
He has a great voice and for years has been asked why he didn't go into radio...instead he was a car and glass salesman for years...
He's a great dad. Used to be very stubborn, but has mellowed a lot over the years.
His days off are Tues. and Wed....they're my favorite days of the week.
We have very little $, so don't go out...but just hang out at home together...and that's the way we like it.

Sticky Notes

They're everywhere...sticky notes...all different sizes shapes colors...and in all different places around the house. All written by me to remind myself, my kids, my husband--of what we have to do. Some say the same thing...yet, on different color paper, so I think they're different. Some I can't even read-I don't have the best hand writing...which becomes even more impossible to read when I write fast, or write with the quickest thing I can find, which is often a pen with little ink that I never threw out and you can barely see, yet I used anyway.
So today, I gathered them all up...I did this right before I went grocery shopping. It is 8:25 AM...
Today is the day that I figure out what I wrote, to see if I actually did anything that I reminded myself to do and to remind my kids and husband of what they were supposed to do. I have a nice sheet of lined paper that I am going to write as clearly as possible, with a fully ink loaded pen, and write 'what's left' to do. My guess is that the list will be long...because even though I have these notes all over the house, I have not read them in a long time...nor did my family...they just see me as 'note person,' not to be taken seriously.
But today is the day.
Dick is at work, then taking our son to his ball game. Then watching the Sox.
Our daughter was up late, and will more than likely sleep late then...well, I'm not sure...but whatever it is, I have already declared that I will not drive anywhere or give her any $ today.
I'm off to my sticky notes...
Enjoy the day.
GO SOX

Late night dancing and no sleep, Sweep-Papi-The Yankees, Chips, Jonas Posters

Well, my daughter has had friends sleep over the past 3 nights. I 'allow' it because she is 13 and her friends are great...but last night they must have thought it was 'Dance Night.' Music and dancing...yes, to the Jonas Brothers. I was tired and asked them repeatedly to stop or even dance quietly..."I'm Sorry, We Will" was the ongoing comment...but I guess their memories are short and they did it again and again. I had a hard time getting mad...and got no sleep..>THEY got sleep because they can sleep as long as they want...but this mom got up early to get ready for the day. I'm really tired, but content...

SWEEP--YUP! A close call...but the Sox did it in Seattle!!! Close call last night...and I must have lost a few pounds just watching the game...a long one with extra innings...most of the Boys of Summer did a great job...but it was Mike Lowell (one of my favorites!!), who in my tired eyes, saved the night....Off tonight and tomorrow night...YES--the YANKEES are in town, here at Fenway, and David Ortiz COMES BACK after a way too long time on the DL...CANNOT WAIT!

CHIPS....so, I get a craving for chips...I actually always have a craving for chips, but sometimes I MUST have them. I knew there was a bag in the cabinet...I check it out...and it's GONE!!! Having a brain storm, I go into my son's room...Now, I respect his privacy to a point, but having a teen...on occasion, do an 'inspection.' This time it was a scavenger hunt. Opened a few draws...the 3rd one I opened had SEVEN bags of chips...all opened! And 2 packages of dried fruit!!! I started to laugh...grabbed 5 of the 7 bags (had to leave him with something). Never told him...let's see if he notices!

Now...keep in mind, our son is almost 16 and daughter is 13. Her room is plastered with Jonas Brother's posters...she takes hours a week cutting and hanging...SO I'm doing my laundry and hear a LOUD.."MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". It's her. Aparently my son, generally a quiet kid, got a hold of a black sharpie and 'decorated' some of her posters...blackening some of their teeth and giving some of them a 'unibrow.' I first noticed the big one and as I looked around, noticed that he had 'sabotaged' several others. I tried to seem mad but I started to laugh...even SHE could not control a snicker or 2. Although he should not have done this, I thought it still got a chuckle out of it.

Today...I'm tired. Need to replace some posters, so taking daughter to magazine store, taking son to practice and doing some Pampered Chef stuff.

ENJOY the day!

2 WIns-thanks Jon and Dice K, PC, Baseball, Sleepovers, Late Night Snacking

OK--the Sox won 2 in a row...we always mention the pitcher first...so I thank Jon Lester and Dice K for making this household a bit happier. Now I must admit...we live in New England and these games are on the West Coast..and don't BEGIN till 10 PM...so as my husband says "the game was watching ME"...as I crash on the couch each night by 10...but I read the headlines the minute I hit this computer of mine...and watch NESN to see all the highlights. I actually DVR each game...and if I don't see a game, will often watch the recording of it. Now, although the pitchers were great...gotta give credit to ALL of the Boys of Summer...and the biggest to Terry Francona...the BEST MLB manager ever!!!!!
PC (Pampered Chef)..am putting in my first book show next week and am SO excited!!! Yesterday I spent the day getting more organized, doing packets for August and reading all of the great recipes..the only 'bad thing' about working with PC is that I may gain back the weight I lost and THEN some...gotta go check out those salad bowls again!
Our son had a summer ball game last night...team had been doing great...but last night was a loss...it's OK...he LOVES this team...great coach, great kids, and great parents...it's what the game is all about.
Sleepovers. Our daughter has had a friend over for 2 nights in a row. All they do is laugh and dance and sing...(to the Jonas Brothers!). Her friend is one of the nicest kids around....and I love having her here...and the bonus...her mom is awesome too! Great kids, great families...it's who I want around :)
Late Night Snacking. I spent $135 at the grocery store yesterday. OK...granted, some of it was on cleaning products and cat food. The rest-food! The fridge is full one day and when I wake up..1/2 empty. When I am sleeping...I will often be awakened by the pitter patter of Teenage Feet...at any and all hours of the night. I will hear the freezer door open...yes, this is why the ice cream is gone. I will smell toast...alas, no bread. The cheese I was going to use for my pasta...must have been those
'midnight madness nachos.' I prefer to eat in the day time...but being summer, and having teens, I have learned to accept that these kids can EAT and that they eat whenever they are hungry...most often past midnight.
Today, my husband is off. Everyone is sleeping in but me...I love the quiet of the morning. I have tons of laundry, some PC, and more laundry. Dinner will be whatever is left in the fridge...or maybe I'll make nothing and let them help themselves during their Midnight Munchies and get hubby and I some Subs from Subway...THAT would be EZ.
Have a great one :)

Giving Back

I am a firm believer that in this world, we need to focus on giving as much as we can and that it is the most important lesson that we can give to our kids. It is not always $...and in my case, it is seldom $ as we are on a very limited budget...so if you can give $ then do so...even a little bit...it all helps. And there are so many other ways to give: your time, your kindness, things that you no longer need,-that what goes around comes around-that if you give, you receive-and that you get immediate gratification. What do I mean by this...you receive the self gratification that you have done some good...and that good feeling...right in your heart...is the most important thing. You are seen as a good person by others-and this is so important. You do this for you and your family. I just added a link on my sidebar :"GivingBack." Please check it out-thanks!
Enjoy every day
Sharon :)

"I'm homesick," Pretzels and Strawberries, Suede Cleaner and C'MON Guys...

Our daughter was invited to spend the week with friends. She has never been one for sleepovers, but this was to be a lot of fun..and with her best friend in a wonderful house on the beach. Day 1 was great...till it was time for bed...and she got...you got it...homesick...the next day...phone calls and texting. I asked if she would stay one more night...friends were driving home and she could get a ride...but after sending me enough text messages to fill my phone, Dick and I went to get her. Every kid has something...and this is 'her something.'
Now I haven't said much about my wonderful husband, Dick. We've been married over 18 years. He's 16 years older than me...and also has 2 grown kids from a previous marriage. I'm going to do a whole post on him soon...
Well, one thing that I always do, is prepare dinner for him and the kids...the kids usually say "thanks" and then make something else or ask for $5- for a slice of pizza or sub (I always give in...ya' gotta choose your battles...and this one's easy...we're lucky we live near lots of sub shops or my kids would think they would pass out from hunger...).
Anyway, knowing that we were going to get our daughter at 7:30 (when Dick came home from work), I packed up some things in ziploc bags....pretzels and strawberries. He ate them all...came home full...and dada...dinner was served. He helped himself to some fat free icecream and the meal was complete...how simple was that ! :)
So on the way home last night, my cell phone rang and it was our 16 year old son...on the way home, could we please pick up suede cleaner and protector for his new sneakers. I say HUH?? It's 9PM...nothing is opened....and we barely left the Cape...he sounded shocked...but I convinced him that tomorrow would be OK to get it. So this morning, at a trip to Walgreens...found just what he needed!!!
AND...as I end most posts...C'MON GUYS...ya...my beloved Red Sox lost again...but they are on the road...and really do so much better here at home...because we have such great fans here...but C'mon...one win will be so nice....Dick and I have coffee every morning before he goes to work and chat about the Sox...the great plays, the not so great plays, the injuries, etc...so tomorrow, let's chat about a win...if not, it's OK...they'll be home at Fenway soon and that's where they are always at their best.
For now, off to pick up daughter from the movies, do some PC (Pampered Chef), take son to baseball practice (if it doesn't get rained out...there are some mighty thick clouds out there).
Catch ya' soon :)

Sad, Happy, Quiet, Hot

Sad--my beloved Red Sox lost last night...but as my husband said, they can't win every game...David Ortiz is coming back next week...so we are all very excited to see him play again...he's doing great in Pawtucket...so when he gets back to Fenway (against the Yankees!)...it will be a game NOT to be missed...cannot wait.
Happy-our daughter, who has always had a hard time with sleeping over someone's house...even at 13-went to the Cape with her best friend and family...told her to try it....she has the option of going for the entire week. Last night when she 'text' me (kids just don't 'call' anymore...so I alway have to keep my glasses nearby)...she sounded happy as ever...and having a great time!!!! I'm SO excited...I really want to work at home and after much thought and research, realized this is the perfect company for me. I am starting out doing book shows, so if any of you wonderful readers want to do one...please get in touch...and for anyone who want to sell...what a great stay at home job it is...just drop me a line... THANKS...
Now that I did my little 'pitch'...here's what else is going on.
It's been such a busy few weeks...Our 16 year old son, who was homeschooled, past a final test with flying colors...and has officially moved to a Junior. Although not in actually in high school, as a homeschooler, he is still the 'equivalent'. In a few weeks he can get his driver's permit. Years ago, when our son was 2 years old, I went up to a parent who had a son who was just getting HIS permit. I started to complain about how hard it was to raise toddlers. He said that that's NOTHING until you kid is ready to get his license. I poopooed this, thinking yea right...what can be more tough than chasing a 2 year old around the house 24/7. And here I am...and I finally get it!! 14 years later!!!!!! What do you feel? Oh just about every gut wrenching feeling you can--
Here are some thoughts,...
"Am I really old enough to have a 16 year old?" (duh, yes, check the calendar and if you don't believe this...dig out the old birth certicates). "Boy do I wish the driving age changed from 16 to 60." "He's getting a job right now, because we can't afford the driving school, insurance, car, gas, etc...and maybe I'll just drive him myself to work." "Is my baby tall enough to really reach the gas pedals?"
Oh well...this is what happens when your kids get older and ya' know...but look on the great side...after he gets his license, you can send him on YOUR errands, have him pick up and drop off his kid sister, wash the car, etc...hmmmm...maybe nicer than I thought!
NOW...the daughter!
Our daughter, 13 is great...she has spent her entire summer with friends. I often heard that raising girls was tougher than raising boys. I honestly think that they are both the best and have different things that are easy and hard. But the one thing that I heard about and never saw UNTIL THIS YEAR...was the DRAMA! Honestly...so much of it, can't even list it all. I must say that our daughter has never been one to like conflict...so when she is not getting along with someone she clams up and says nothing...but of course, this causes drama because then her silence is mistaken for anger...which of course, IS anger, but she is trying to communicate just silence to end the anger, which is never the way it turns out...and words fly...and young teens are SO good with words...any words...I am glad that she cannot be accused of being harsh to anyone...but her silence says it all often. More drama stories...and details to come...but for now, I have to chat about what has been surrounding me for months...
THE JONAS BROTHERS
Our daughter's "Life" (HER WORDS) is the Jonas Brothers. Her room is plastered with posters (106 to date) , the only music we hear from her IHome or computer is...The Jonas Brothers...etc..etc...she eats drinks and sleeps these young men. Now I must admit that they're actually pretty good....but after a while I really would like to hear some good old Country Music. She is going to the concert in a few weeks. She and her 2 best friends have 'done it up.' They have spent the last week doing the following-
1)Making Posters 2) They bought bright orange shirts and decorated them declaring their love and then bright red shorts and had JONAS but on the rear end...when I asked (the silly question)...why orange and red...they reminded me that those are the colors of flames and this is the "Burning Up Tour." They made videos to enter a contest at a local radio station, to meet the group, are painting their nails the night before with the words "I love..". My daughter is even getting one of their favorite colors, as her elastics on her braces the day before the concert (I forget if it's Nick Joe or Kevin...and I even forget the colors). She even asked me to make ankelets with the phrase...PEACE LOVE JONAS...for each girl.
Now...what else,,,
I've spend most of my time the past few weeks on the new business, the kids, and of course, watching my beloved Red Sox...so I will end this post on them...
Did you SEE the All Star Game? The Red Sox did it again...with much help from the other great players in the American League...I was most happy for our beloved coach, Terry Francona...!!! AND our beloved JD Drew..>CONGRATS JD!!!!!!! They have been off for 2 nights and are on tonight...can't wait!
Off to do some stuff...am going to write more often soon as things are quieter..and I have more free time.
Bye for now :)

Saturday...

It's 9:15. My husband went to work early so he could come home early and catch our son's Babe Ruth Game this afternoon...he is pitching. Our daughter, who had 2 sleepovers back to back, is wiped out and asleep-our son, who is the Night Owl of the family, is also asleep,....but soon to be awakened by MOM---his mean old alarm clock...lol. I remember my husband telling me that when HIS mom had to get his brother up, she would poke him with a broom because he was so nasty in the morning, he would throw things, no matter who was in the line of fire...and his alarm clock never got him up...so she figured that the further away she was, the safer she was.
My day if full of laundry, The Red Sox, Babe Ruth, doing a bit of cooking..not very eventful...but that's a good thing.
Sad thing--although we all knew it, looks like Curt Shilling may not play ball again...I honestly hope he is OK to give one more year next year...depends on what happens when he has surgery on his shoulder next week. There are other Sox out on the DL...but this one is the one that looks long term, and maybe career ending...Curt, our thoughts are with you. David Ortiz has been and will probably be...out for some time, but we are sure he will play lots more ball. GO SOX!!!

The kids are out of school today!

Ah...the last day of school...and the beginning of a wonderful summer...and finally, to work on my blog. So much to say...but will have to keep it short just for now.
I need to make some stuff for an end of year party that our 13 year old daughter is off to, and to try to get the stains out of some baseball pants that our 15 (almost 16) year old son will be wearing to his Babe Ruth Playoff Game this weekend...More on them soon.
For now...to all those Middle Aged Moms...Moms of teens...I wish you a peaceful summer...do some things for yourself and make life easy...some things I am doing: letting the kids sleep and not listening to them grumble when I try to wake them, letting them eat almost anything they want...taking a break from the kitchen, showing them where the washing machine and dishwasher are so they can do some stuff around here (if a 16 year old can drive, he can sure turn on an appliance and if a 13 year old can find her way around a 3 story mall...she can sure find the vacuum cleaner).
Get yourself that pedicure, head to the deli department first, try that craft you have wanted to try for years, call a girl friend and enjoy a great meal, get yourself a haircut at a fancy salon...you go girl! It's your time...and your summer :)
